Distributed MAC (Media Access Control) Layer

Optimized for power line communication, ITRAN's MAC implementation is designed to support a wide variety of audio, video and data transmissions.

Based on proven MAC protocol standards and concepts (such as IEEE 802.11), the ITRAN MAC integrates patented and patent pending enhancements specially adapted for the power line medium. By controlling various parameters (such as packet size, power level and rate), ITRAN’s MAC enables superior power line physical layer performance.

Implemented primarily in hardware (the ITC1 chip), the ITRAN MAC employs a small amount of software code that is easily and cost-effectively integrated into a variety of low cost micro-controllers and requires limited memory.

Main Features and Benefits Include:

  • CSMA/CA line access using unique RTS/CTS mechanism
  • Support for short packet transmission without RTS/CTS
  • Physical and virtual carrier sense functions ensure minimum collisions in the channel
  • Quality of Service (“QoS”) (priorities, limit for channel capture time, adaptive back-off and more)
  • Rate and power adaptation to channel quality
  • Support for transmission of single Ethernet packet in one burst
  • ARQ and partial ARQ
  • Unicast, broadcast and multicast transmissions
  • Complete solution (when combined with ITRAN’s physical layer ICs) for USB, Ethernet and embedded power line node implementations
